 tween the Agile (deliberately capitalized) community and the data modeling/
 architecture community.&nbsp;This schism inhibits us from building truly ag
 ile (deliberately lower-case) applications that are cheaper, faster, and be
 tter than earlier approaches.\n\nThe Schism:\n\nMany Agilists believe that 
 data modeling and architecture, in the best case, are luxuries one can&rsqu
 o;t afford in order to move quickly. In the worst case, some believe modeli
 ng and architecture are bureaucratic relics of &quot;waterfall&quot; method
 s that are fundamentally incompatible with Agile schedules and must be avoi
 ded at all costs.\n\nIn fairness, many modelers/architects view Agile work 
 products as quick-and-dirty point solutions that will never converge as qua
 lity, enterprise solutions and are fundamentally incompatible with properly
  governed, shared data.&nbsp;Integration can only be achieved via top-down 
 enterprise model-driven program management.&nbsp;Pay me now or pay me (more
 ) later to fix it.&nbsp;Many modelers/architects view the Agile rage as the
  latest fad that will hopefully soon pass.\n\nThe Solution:\n\nBoth biases 
 are misguided.&nbsp;It is possible to achieve durable, enterprise integrati
 on with dramatic productivity improvement, but it requires both the Agile a
 nd modeling communities to adopt significantly new methods.&nbsp;This works
 hop uses a case study to illustrate an approach that delivers demonstrable 
 business value early through incremental and opportunistic sprints yet conv
 erges to enterprise integration with data quality and durability.&nbsp;The 
 critical elements of the approach are:\n\n
 Business problem-driven project scope\n
 Clear metrics that quantify business value\n
 Rapid modeling techniques (Rule of Fives)\n
 Iterative model-management practices\n
 Modular, multi-layered data architecture\n\n
